Listen to/learn from your Ranger - they know a lot of good stuff.
Get up early everyday and get on the trail as soon as possible. 5:00 am Philmont time is 7:00 am East Coast time.
Breakfast can be eaten while hiking.
Hiking in the cool of the day.
Gets you to your destination early to take advantage of program opportunities.
Avoids hiking/setting up camp in the afternoon thundershowers.
Don't over plan - stuff is going to happen. Can't find my socks, someone is injured, took the wrong trail, etc.
If you have dry camp, try to cook dinner for lunch where water is available and eat lunch for dinner. (We have 3!)
Refill your water bladders in the evening before you go to bed. Huge time drain in the morning and water chills in your pack all night.
Adults: train hard! Remember that you'll be chasing teenagers up and down mountains at 7-12,000 feet above sea level.
Have fun!
