Menu Planning
Getting Started
Each Crew has a menu and shopping planning worksheet in their respective Crew folder in the main Crew and Activities Folder.
Start talking with the crew about what they want and any special dietary needs
Finalize the menu and send for approval to Mr. C and Mr. Thapa before June 15th
Complete a detailed shopping list from the menu by June 29th. Include estimated quantities and prices.
General
If it is designated as Group or on the road, no Crew planning is necessary for that meal
Menus and Shopping lists
Shopping list must be split into two parts
Non-perishables for the entire week/perishables for meals on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday - these will be purchased and brought with us
Perishables for meals on Wednesday/Thursday/Friday - these will be purchased in Bar Harbor on Tuesday afternoon
Must estimate the cost for purchased items for the entire week
Some crew members may have special dietary needs. Make sure that you understand these and make reasonable accommodations either in the meal or through a substitute. It is reasonable to expect that substitutes are used commonly when a member of the crew has more specific dietary requirements. If you have any questions, contact Mr. C
No Candy, Pop Tarts or Ramen to be purchased with any portion of the food budget
The Troop will supply trails snacks (2 per person on hiking days)
Crews are responsible for purchasing paper towels, cooking spray, etc. in their budget
Buying Food
Purchase and bring non-perishables for the entire week and perishables for the meals on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday.
On Tuesday July 11th afternoon/evening, grubmasters will be taken to the Hannaford in Bar Harbor to get perishables for Wednesday/Thursday/Friday meals. These purchases must be allocated for in the Crews food budget and will be paid for by an adult leader
The Troop has two very large coolers and a medium sized cooler available that can be put in the trailer
The troop will provide propane and charcoal. If patrols are using Dutch Ovens they must specify whether they will use 1 or 2 and for how many meals.
Breakfast
Consider quick breakfasts on activity days and cooked breakfasts on hiking days
Make sure to include good protein sources for hiking days.
Lunch
Plan for all crew lunches to be pack and go. As with Switzerland, we are recommending that everyone bring a small plastic container to hold sandwiches.
For lunches, consider more space conscious and durable bread choices such as tortillas for wraps rather than bread which will get squashed.
Dinner
These are awesome opportunities for practicing new meals - get creative, search the web.
Did someone say Advancement?
This is our first Troop week long adventure trip (in a long time) where the crews will need to plan and execute 6 days of meals. This is an awesome opportunity for rank and merit badge requirements. Talk with your Crew leader if you want to ensure that you will have the opportunity to complete cooking requirements.
